Trove Australia entry

As a building form, arcades in Brisbane boomed during the prosperous interwar years. This study examines the social, geographical, economic and climatic factors which influenced arcade building in Brisbane, from the first in 1877, to the conclusion of the study in 1996. An extensive appendix catalogues and outlines the history of a total of 33 arcades identified for the Brisbane CBD area, many virtually unknown or long forgotten. Each arcade is illustrated using contemporary sources; extensive use was made of newspaper reports and advertisements.
